WhatsApp building new app for businesses

WhatsApp last week introduced its revamped Snapchat-esque Stories feature, but that's not all the Facebook-owned messenger has up its sleeve.

The company late last week announced it's working on a new commercial messaging platform specifically for businesses, according to the Hindustan Times.

"WhatsApp for Business is all about small and medium businesses, WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton reportedly said, "where you have a small employee count and have a large customer count, and the goals are very different."

The new app will reportedly launch first in India, where there are over 200 million WhatsApp users. Many US companies are looking to get a slice of India's growing digital market -- most recently, Microsoft launched Skype Lite in the country last week. Facebook has also tried its hand at penetrating India, last year attempting to bring its Free Basics imitative to the country.

WhatsApp, which has over a billion active users, is also the latest to take a play out of Snapchat's playbook, last week introducing feature that lets you post photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. Facebook, which bought WhatsApp for $19 billion, is trialling a similar feature over in Ireland.

Google Play store update to help you find gaming's hidden gems

Google Play is getting a power-up for its games.

Google's app store service is revamping how it looks at games while adding new tools for developers to earn more and analyze its performance, the company announced on Monday during its Developer Day event.

Gaming on devices powered by Google's Android mobile software boomed internationally in 2016, with the help of Pokemon Go and Clash Royale. Last year, up to 300 million new users on Android played games in countries like Brazil, India and Indonesia. Google is looking to put the spotlight on hidden gems with its latest update, expected to arrive soon.

When people head to Google Play, the games will be organized by engagement instead of downloads, meaning that less-popular games could have their time to shine.

"There are many instances when great games don't get the visibility and attention they deserve," Paul Bankhead, Google Play's director of product management said in a statement. "We've begun tuning our algorithms to optimize for user engagements, not just downloads."

Google Play will now be looking at a game's star rating, along with how often players come back to the game and how often it's played to decide how it should be promoted. It will also be launching new editorial pages for games in February, with editors highlighting high-quality games.

Game developers will also be able to adjust their own prices and run promotions on their own starting Monday through the Google Play Developer Console. When Google tested out the feature, developers saw up to 20 times more downloads during the deals.

The company is hosting a series of lightning talks on Monday with a focus on virtual reality and augmented reality. Google's Daydream View VR headset is an emerging platform for VR games through the Play store.

The Nougat update for Android improved graphics for mobile games, and Google is showing it off with three new games it previewed at Developer Day, including:

Transformers: Forged to Fight, a fighting game featuring the Autobots and Decepticons, which will be available on April 5.
Battle Breakers, a board game styled RPG from Epic Games powered by Unreal Engine 4, where you build a team of heroes to battle monsters.
Injustice 2, the sequel to NetherRealm Studios' superhero fighting game where DC Comics characters battle it out.
For the Google Daydream:

Virtual Rabbids, a light-hearted VR game by Ubisoft where you play around with Rabbids.
Beartopia, a co-op VR game where you live in a village as cute, square bears to grow a community.

SpaceX to fly two tourists around Moon in 2018

        US private rocket company SpaceX has announced that two private citizens have paid to be sent around the Moon

The mission is planned for late 2018, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said, adding that the tourists "have already paid a significant deposit".
"This presents an opportunity for humans to return to deep space for the first time in 45 years," he said.
The two unnamed people will fly aboard a spaceship which is set for its first unmanned test flight later this year.
Mr Musk said the co-operation of America's Nasa space agency had made the plan possible.
He said the two passengers "will travel faster and further into the solar system than any before them".
Mr Musk declined to reveal their identities, only saying that they knew each other and that "it's nobody from Hollywood".
"Like the Apollo astronauts before them, these individuals will travel into space carrying the hopes and dreams of all humankind, driven by the universal human spirit of exploration.
"We expect to conduct health and fitness tests, as well as begin initial training later this year."

The first mission would be unmanned, and the next one - with crew - was expected in the second quarter of 2018, the billionaire entrepreneur and inventor said.

He also said the first passengers "are entering this with their eyes open, knowing that there is some risk here".
"They're certainly not naive, and we'll do everything we can to minimise that risk, but it's not zero."
The space tourists would make a loop around the Moon, skimming the lunar surface and then going well beyond, Mr Musk said.
The mission will not involve a lunar landing.
If Nasa decided it wanted to be first to take part in a lunar flyby mission, then the agency would have priority, Mr Musk said.
The US has not sent astronauts to the Moon since the early 1970s.

MWC 2017: Google brings Assistant to more Android phones

Google's voice-activated digital assistant will soon be available on smartphones running the latest versions of the Android operating system.
Until now, Google Assistant had only been available on the firm's own Pixel phones.
The service, like Siri on iPhones, allows users to interact with apps and ask questions.
LG was one of the first smartphone makers to reveal it would feature the assistant on its new device, the G6.
Google's update will starting rolling out this week to users with Android 6.0 Marshmallow or 7.0 Nougat installed.
"With this update, hundreds of millions of Android users will now be able to try out the Google Assistant," said Gummi Hafsteinsson, product lead for Google Assistant, in a blog post.
But other virtual assistants are out there. At the Mobile World Congress tech show in Barcelona, Lenovo Moto revealed that Amazon's Alexa assistant would be coming to the Moto Z phone.
This will happen via an alternative back - known as a MotoMod - that Amazon will sell for the Moto Z later this year.
And at the CES tech show in Las Vegas last month, Chinese tech giant Huawei announced it would include Amazon's rival Alexa assistant on its phones.

'Natural step'

Google Assistant differs from its competitors slightly in that it is designed to prompt conversations with users and respond to follow-up queries.
"It is a natural step for Google to offer Google Assistant to as many smartphones as possible because AI is at the heart of Google's strategy, said tech analyst Ian Fogg at IHS Technology.
"With the machine learning that underpins Google Assistant AI, the more people that use Assistant, the smarter it will become."
Initially, Assistant will be available to English-speaking users in the United States.
English-speaking users in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom will receive the update next.
Support for other languages will follow, Google said.

Nokia 3310 mobile phone resurrected at MWC 2017

Nokia's 3310 phone has been relaunched nearly 17 years after its debut.
Many consider the original handset iconic because of its popularity and sturdiness. More than 126 million were produced before it was phased out in 2005.
The revamped version will be sold under licence by the Finnish start-up HMD Global, which also unveiled several Nokia-branded Android smartphones.
One expert said it was a "fantastic way" to relaunch Nokia's phone brand.
"The 3310 was the first mass-market mobile and there's a massive amount of nostalgia and affection for it," commented Ben Wood from the technology consultancy CCS Insight.
"If HMD had just announced three Android devices they would have barely got a couple of column inches in the press.
"So, the 3310 is a very clever move and we expect it will sell in significant volumes."

However, its advantage over more powerful handsets is its battery life. HMD says the colour-screened phone has up to a month's standby time and delivers more than 22 hours of talk time.
It also comes with the modern version of the classic game Snake preinstalled.
Its launch price is €49 ($51,75; £41.51).
"It's almost like a digital detox or a holiday phone," HMD's chief executive Arto Nummela told the BBC.
"If you want to switch off to an extent but you still need to have a [mobile] lifeline, it's a brilliant solution.
"Why wouldn't you buy this like candy? If you see this hanging on the shelf at the checkout in a [see-through] package, then you'd just buy it as an accessory.

HMD also confirmed the Nokia 6 Android smartphone would be released worldwide following its China debut in January.

The device has a 16 megapixel rear camera, a 5.5in (14cm) 1080p "full definition" screen and includes the Google Assistant helper - the search engine's rival to Apple's Siri.
It is priced as a mid-tier device at €229, alongside a glossy black special edition that costs €299.
In addition, the firm showed off smaller, lower-range Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 models.
Taiwan's Foxconn will manufacture the phones, which may offset concerns that networks might have about HMD's capacity to deliver.
"Foxconn - with its experience working with Apple and Samsung - is certainly the standout device manufacturer," commented Tim Coulling from the tech research firm Canalys.
"It's ability to help HMD go from small to large scale will be a critical factor in their partnership.
"It also means if HMD wants to locate manufacturing in different regions to take advantage of pockets of demand, that's something Foxconn will allow them to achieve."

However, another market watcher said HMD's success was far from guaranteed.
"Resurrecting one of Nokia's feature phone bestsellers seems like a good beachhead to attack the smartphone market.
"But another part of Nokia's heritage was its high-end devices.
"What HMD needs next is a higher-end [Android smartphone] that is different, and that's always a problem with Android: how do you differentiate?
"Nokia's brand will get them so far - especially in emerging markets - but trying to push into the high-end versus Apple, Samsung or even Huawei will be tough."

Apple's new $5bn headquarters to open in April

Apple has announced that it will begin moving staff into its new $5 billion (£4 billion) headquarters in April, opening a futuristic campus that has been more than six years in the making.

The company said that a new 1,000-seat auditorium at the facility will be named the Steve Jobs Theatre in honor of its co-founder, who died four months after he presented plans for the spaceship-spaced building and tree-filled park in 2011, his last public event.

The donut-shaped building will be the centre of the 2.9 million "Apple Park" in Cupertino, California, near Apple's current headquarters. The building was originally scheduled to open in 2015 but like many large construction projects faced budget overruns and delays.

It will take six months to move all of its employees from the current Apple Campus, and construction of the buildings and surrounding park land is slated to continue through summer, Apple said Wednesday.

It will ultimately hold over 14,000 employees, with two miles of running and walking paths and a café and visitor centre that will be open to the public. The building is naturally ventilated, so requires no heating or air conditioning.

Jobs said in 2011 that he wanted the campus to be the "best office building in the world." He said he hoped architecture students would come to visit it for inspiration. The building's outside walls are made entirely of what Apple says are the world's largest panels of curved glass.

"Steve’s vision for Apple stretched far beyond his time with us. He intended Apple Park to be the home of innovation for generations to come," said Apple's chief executive Tim Cook. "The workspaces and parklands are designed to inspire our team as well as benefit the environment. We’ve achieved one of the most energy-efficient buildings in the world and the campus will run entirely on renewable energy."

Apple's design chief Sir Jony Ive has taken a hands-on role designing the headquarters, working with architecture firm London + Partners.

WhatsApp adds a touch of Snapchat with 'Status' feature

Facebook seems to have a thing for Snapchat Stories. The popular feature, on the social network that's giving Facebook a run for the money, lets people post a string of photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. In August, Facebook-owned Instagram introduced its own version, called Instagram Stories. And Facebook is currently testing Facebook Stories in its mobile app in Ireland.

Now a similar feature is coming to another Facebook-owned app. WhatsApp, which has more than a billion users, on Monday introduced a revamped version of its Status feature. Users will be able to share a string of photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. Where have we heard that one before?

Previously, the Status feature let you display only simple things like "at school" or "at the movies" or some similar snippet you'd written yourself.

With the revamped feature, you can share photos, videos, and GIFs and punch them up with emojis, text and drawings. You'll be able to share them with all your contacts. WhatsApp also said the new feature is encrypted end-to-end.

Snapchat, which announced its filing for an IPO earlier this month, is manna for young people. Nearly 70 percent of all 18- to 24-year-olds in the US use the app, according to ComScore. Facebook has noticed.

Instagram's version of Stories has been popular. The feature has 150 million daily users, and last month Instagram said Stories would start showing ads.

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum said in a blog post that the new version of Status is meant to coincide with the app's eighth birthday, on February 24. Facebook bought the app in 2014 for $19 billion.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai writes back to girl, 7, who wants a job

An "entrepreneurial" seven year old wrote to Google for a job and its CEO replied.
After discussing her father's work, Chloe Bridgewater decided she would like to work for Google and penned a letter beginning "dear Google boss".
It was only the schoolgirl's second letter, after her first missive to Father Christmas, but the search engine's CEO Sundar Pichai wrote back.
Her father Andy said the girl "took it all in her stride".

"We were gobsmacked, but I don't think Chloe could understand the magnitude of the reaction she'd got afterwards," said father Andy, a sales manager from Hereford.
"She's got a great entrepreneurial spirit. Ever since nursery, she's always been told in school reports she's bright, hard-working and polite - we're very proud of her and her younger sister [Hollie, five] is similar," he said.

Mr Pichai's full reply
"Thank you so much for your letter. I'm glad that you like computers and robots, and hope that you will continue to learn about technology.
"I think if you keep working hard and following your dreams, you can accomplish everything you set your mind to - from working at Google to swimming at the Olympics.
"I look forward to receiving your job application when you are finished with school! :)
"All the best to you and your family."

Mr Pichai, who rose from humble beginnings in India, was appointed Google's CEO in 2015.
The inspiration for Chloe's letter had been internet research showing Google's offices including bean bags, go karts and slides but she also highlighted a keen interest in computers in her application.
Chloe also admitted to an interest in a job in a chocolate factory or as a swimmer at the Olympics in the letter, and Mr Pichai's reply said "if she kept working hard and following her dreams, she could accomplish everything she set her mind to."
Mr Bridgewater said he and his wife Julie, a HR advisor, had seen Chloe's business acumen in action already.
Besides her love of swimming - 20 lengths on Tuesdays with her mum - Chloe has also volunteered to clean the kitchen for 20p, he said.
"She is only young so she needs to play with her friends, jump on a trampoline but whenever she shows an interest in something else - like this letter - we want to encourage her," Andy said.

India launches record 104 satellites in single mission

India has created history by successfully launching 104 satellites on a single mission, overtaking the previous record of 37 satellites launched by Russia in 2014.
All but three of the satellites are from foreign countries, most of them from the United States.
The launch took place from Sriharikota space centre in south India.
Observers say it is a sign that India is emerging as a major player in the multi-billion dollar space market.
"This is a great moment for each and every one of us. Today we have created history," project director B Jayakumar was quoted as saying by the Reuters news agency.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to congratulate the scientists tweeting, "This remarkable feat by @isro is yet another proud moment for our space scientific community and the nation. India salutes our scientists."

Of the 104 small satellites, 96 belong to the United States while Israel, Kazakhstan, the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland and the Netherlands are the other foreign clients.
A majority of the satellites have earth-imaging capability and belong to a US company named Planet.
An Indian cartographic satellite, believed to be capable of taking high resolution images is also on board. It is expected to be used to monitor regional arch rivals Pakistan and China.

The BBC's Sanjoy Majumder in Delhi says the successful launch is yet another feather in the cap of India's ambitious space programme that has earned a reputation of offering a reliable low cost alternative to existing international players.
The Indian government has increased the budget for its space programme this year and also announced plans to send a mission to Venus.
Over the past two decades, India has become a key player in the lucrative commercial space market offering a low-cost alternative.

Dubai announces passenger drone plans

A drone that can carry people will begin "regular operations" in Dubai from July, the head of the city's Roads and Transportation Agency has announced at the World Government Summit.
The Chinese model eHang 184 has already had test flights, said Matt al-Tayer.
The drone can carry one passenger weighing up to 100 kg (220 pounds) and has a 30 minute flight time.
The passenger uses a touch screen to select a destination. There are no other controls inside the craft.
It is "auto-piloted" by a command centre, according to a video released by the government agency.
It has reported speeds of up to 100 miles per hour (160 kilometres per hour) and can fly 31 miles (50km) on a single battery charge.
"This is not only a model," Mr al-Tayer, according to a report by the Associated Press.
"We have actually experimented with this vehicle flying in Dubai's skies."
The device was also approved for testing in Nevada in June 2016.
'Resilient to failure'
Dr Steve Wright, senior lecturer in avionics and aircraft systems at the University of the West of England, told the BBC that safety would have to be paramount.
"The way these systems work, making them work normally is easy. The tricky bit is making systems that are resilient to failure," he said.
"I would like to see the drone flying for at least 1000 hours before I saw a human in it."
Dr Wright added that he would not be volunteering for an early flight.
"I'd have to be taken on board kicking and screaming."
Last month Israeli firm Urban Aeronautics announced that its Cormorant passenger drone - designed for military use - could be in use by 2020.
The $14m (£11m) drone can carry 500kg (1,100lb) at 185km/h (115mph).

Facebook videos to autoplay with sound

Much of Facebook’s recent growth can be attributed to the spread of video on its network - and the company told investors recently it planned to aggressively monetise that success.
Today, it announced some ideas to get things moving - starting with a change many users may not appreciate.
Videos have autoplayed on Facebook’s News Feed for some time, leading to a curious rise of “silent movies” as publishers adapted to knowing that the majority of viewers would be watching, but not listening, to their work.
But between now and the end of the year Facebook’s News Feed will be enabling sound on your News Feed by default, a move the company has been testing out on a limited number of users for a short while.
The firm said it had received “positive feedback” so far.
"With this update, sound fades in and out as you scroll through videos in News Feed, bringing those videos to life,” the company explained in a blog post on Tuesday.
"As people watch more video on phones, they’ve come to expect sound when the volume on their device is turned on.”
Thankfully - for those who don’t want videos to suddenly play out on the bus - if your phone is set to be completely silent, Facebook will not override that. You can also turn it off completely in the Facebook app’s settings.
But data shows us that when something is thrust upon users as the default, they will mostly stick to it.

It will likely change the style of many of the videos we see on the network. For some time now, publishers have realised that because viewers were probably not listening to clips, but just watching them, they needed to add subtitles as a way to draw people in.
Publishers may well relish the chance to do away with that legwork. Subtitling is time-consuming and costly. Facebook’s analytics tools go into great detail about how videos are performing, and so expect companies to be watching closely to see if they can now give up on subtitles.

Accessibility hit

If that’s the case, it could potentially be terrible news for accessibility. One welcome side effect of viewing habits on Facebook has been that impaired viewers were benefitting from subtitling becoming good business sense as well as just the right thing to do for accessibility.
Earlier this week in the UK, disability groups cheered the arrival of a new amendment to the Digital Economy Bill that would push broadcasters to improve subtitling for on-demand content. It is intended to bring existing laws over TV subtitling into the modern age - giving media regulator Ofcom the ability to set quotas and minimum standards for subtitling online.
But that, as it stands, would not apply to Facebook - and even if it did, the majority of video posted to Facebook originates overseas.
There is, however, potential good news on the horizon: Facebook has also been tentatively rolling out voice recognition software designed to automatically transcribe clips and add subtitles. But, I’m yet to see software truly up to that massive task.
Today’s announcement by Facebook was just one part of several plans the company shared about its video ambitions. Vertical videos will be displayed in full, and therefore appear larger in your feed. And you’ll also be able to carry on watching a video while scrolling down your feed - a feature already found in YouTube’s app.
The plans also include new efforts to reach viewers through their televisions.
The company is launching an app on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Samsung Smart TV with more platforms to come, it said.

Ghanaian operators hit out at mobile money tax

The Ghanaian government risks “shooting down” its efforts to create a less cash-reliant economy by taxing mobile money services, mobile operators told Citi Business News.

Sources from operators, including MTN Ghana, responded to reports the country’s Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful believed a tax on mobile money was “not a bad option”. Although authorities have made no decision on a levy, operators have been quick to criticise any move towards such a fee.

MTN Ghana’s head of mobile money Eli Hini told the business title the government should encourage the use of mobile money services rather than disincentivise through taxes. Hini explained new regulations in the banking sector had a negative impact and said restraint should be shown before imposing new rules on the mobile money market.

Figures released in October 2016 by the Bank of Ghana show mobile money services are gaining strong traction in the country with the number of registered users growing 50 per cent year-on-year. Transaction value during the period grew 122 per cent.

Four operators in the country are registered to provide mobile money services – MTN, Tigo, Airtel and Vodafone. Citi Business News did not specify which operators, aside from MTN, had spoken out against the taxation of services.

WhatsApp rolls out two-factor authentication security

WhatsApp’s 1.2 billion users will now have access to two-step verification, which means if someone else gets hold of their device or phone number, their messages will be safe.

The feature was first launched in the beta version of the app last year and started to roll out to users last week on WhatsApp’s iOS, Android and Windows apps.

“Two-step verification is an optional feature that adds more security to your account… Any attempt to verify your phone number on WhatsApp must be accompanied by the six-digit passcode that you created using this feature,” the firm explained when it was testing the feature.

Once turned on, users will have to enter the passcode every time they register their phone number with WhatsApp again – for instance if they buy a new device.

The method was described by The Wall Street Journal as “one of the best safeguards any online service can offer.”

Most firms like Google and even parent Facebook already offer the measure, also known as two-factor authentication, but in their case it works differently: a code is generated in an app or sent via text rather than be set by the user.

In the case of WhatsApp, users will have to remember their passcode, or set up a backup email through which they can disable the feature if they forget the code. The feature can also be disabled from within the app, without a passcode.

In order for two-step authentication to work, users will have to log out of WhatsApp when they are not using it.

If a user forgets their passcode and doesn’t have a back up email to disable the feature they will have to wait seven days to get back into the app.

WhatsApp also said it will regularly ask users for the code to help them remember it.

In a bid to up security, WhatsApp launched end-to-end encryption last year.

In a recent interview with Mobile World Live, Tim Gallagher of SafeSwiss said WhatsApp “has done an absolutely remarkable job introducing encryption to the masses in an extremely short timeframe” but was critical of its announcement that it was sharing user data with parent Facebook, describing it “is a complete contradiction of earlier promises.” The move has faced a severe backlash.

Schoolchildren in England will be offered lessons in cyber security in a bid to find the experts of the future to defend the UK from attacks.
It is hoped 5,700 pupils aged 14 and over will spend up to four hours a week on the subject in a five-year pilot.
Classroom and online teaching, "real-world challenges" and work experience will be made available from September.
A Commons committee last week warned that a skills shortage was undermining confidence in the UK's cyber defences.
The risk that criminals or foreign powers might hack into critical UK computer systems is now ranked as one of the top four threats to national security.
'Cutting-edge skills'
Russia in particular is suspected of planning sustained attacks on Western targets.
Cyber security is a fast-growing industry, employing 58,000 experts, the government says, but the Public Accounts Committee has warned it is proving difficult to recruit people with the right skills.

Cheating Frenchman sues Uber for tipping off wife about affair

A businessman in southern France is suing ride-hailing company Uber over his wife's discovery of rides he took to see his lover, his lawyer said.
The man says he once requested an Uber driver from his wife's phone.
Despite logging off, the application continued to send notifications to her iPhone afterwards, revealing his travel history and arousing her suspicions.
The couple have since divorced. The lawsuit is reportedly worth up to €45m ($48m; £38m).
"My client was the victim of a bug in an application," his lawyer David-André Darmon told AFP news agency after the case was lodged at a court in Grasse.
"The bug has caused him problems in his private life," Mr Darmon added.

The lawyer did not comment on a report in Le Figaro newspaper that the lawsuit was worth up to €45m, saying only that his client wished to remain discreet and anonymous.
Other users had also encountered the Uber software bug, Le Figaro said.
The newspaper carried out its own experiment by logging in and out of Uber on one iPhone and then logging in on another and ordering a driver. The app then sent screen notifications about the order to both phones.
The glitch affected iPhones before a software update in December, the newspaper said. Android phones did not appear to be affected.
Uber said it would not comment on the case but added that the best possible protection of clients' personal details was a priority.

All new iPhones will feature wireless charging, analyst says

Apple is rumored to be launching three new iPhones later this year and KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reportedly believes all three will offer wireless charging.

We've only got about seven or eight months to go before Apple introduces its next iPhones and there's been some chatter about Apple putting out three new iPhones instead of the usual two, with one being a super high-end model with prices for it approaching $1,000 in the U.S.

Now the site MacRumors is reporting that an analyst from KGI Securities, Ming-Chi Kuo, is claiming that all three new models will not only feature all-glass casings but wireless charging and OLED displays.

In a research note obtained by MacRumors, Kuo says that wireless charging increases the internal temperature of smartphones and Apple will be equipping the new iPhones with a new 3D Touch module with "additional graphite sheet lamination" to prevent the phones from overheating and wigging out.

We take all these analyst claims with a grain of salt, but the wireless charging rumors have been fairly persistent and it does seem like a logical feature that Apple might add to the next iPhones, whatever they're called. All that said, Apple could simply come out with "S" versions of its current iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

As you might expect, Apple didn't have anything to say about Kuo's research note. It does not comment on rumor or speculation.

Wordpress blogs defaced in hack attacks

A security flaw in the WordPress blogging software has let hackers attack and deface tens of thousands of sites.
One estimate suggests more than 1.5 million pages on blogs have been defaced.
The security firm that found the vulnerability said some hackers were now trying to use it to take over sites rather than just spoil pages.
WordPress urged site owners to update software to avoid falling victim.
Feeding frenzy
The vulnerability is found in an add-on for the WordPress blogging software that was introduced in versions released at the end of 2016.
Security firm Sucuri found the "severe" bug and informed WordPress about it on 20 January.
In a blogpost, WordPress said it delayed going public about the flaw so it could prompt hosting firms to update their software to a fixed version.
The patched version of WordPress was formally released on 26 January and led to many sites and blogs automatically applying the update.
However, many blogs have not followed suit leaving them open to defacement attacks.
Security firm WordFence said it had seen evidence that 20 hacker groups were trying to meddle with vulnerable sites. About 40,000 blogs are believed to have been hit.
The vulnerability had set off a "feeding frenzy" among hacker groups, WordFence founder Mark Maunder told the Bleeping Computer tech news site.
"During the past 48 hours we have seen over 800,000 attacks exploiting this specific vulnerability across the WordPress sites we monitor," he added.
Sucuri said some hacker groups had moved on from defacement to attempts to use the bug to hijack sites for their own ends.
"Attackers are starting to think of ways to monetise this vulnerability," wrote Sucuri founder Daniel Cid. "Defacements don't offer economic returns, so that will likely die soon."
Hackers were keen to use the vulnerable sites as proxies for spam or malware campaigns, he said.

TV maker unlawfully tracked viewing habits

TV maker Vizio has agreed to pay out $2.2m in order to settle allegations it unlawfully collected viewing data on its customers.
The US Federal Trade Commission said the company’s smart TV technology had captured data on what was being viewed on screen and transmitted it to the firm’s servers.
The data was sold to third parties, the FTC said.
Vizio has said the data sent could not be matched up to individuals.
It wrote: " [The firm] never paired viewing data with personally identifiable information such as name or contact information, and the Commission did not allege or contend otherwise.
"Instead, as the complaint notes, the practices challenged by the government related only to the use of viewing data in the ‘aggregate’ to create summary reports measuring viewing audiences or behaviours.”
'Second-by-second'
The FTC said the data collection began in February 2014 and affected around 11 million televisions.
"Vizio collected unique data from each household with a Vizio smart TV that included not only second-by-second viewing information, but also the household’s IP address, nearby access points, zip code, and other information,” the FTC said in a blog post explaining the settlement.
"They also shared that information with other companies."
It added: "This settlement stops Vizio’s unauthorised tracking, and makes clear that smart TV makers should get people’s consent before collecting and sharing television viewing information.”
As part of the settlement Vizio agreed to more prominently tell its customers how data is stored and collected, and to seek firmer, clearer consent beforehand. The company has been ordered to delete the data it collected.
Smart TVs - sets that have additional features such as on-demand viewing or video calling - have raised privacy concerns before. In 2015 it emerged Samsung’s models were transmitting potentially sensitive voice data without users’ knowledge.

Uber hires 'flying car engineer' from Nasa

A former Nasa engineer has been hired by taxi-hailing firm Uber to help its research into flying cars.

Mark Moore is joining Uber's Elevate division as its director of engineering for aviation.
Uber's interest in flying cars was outlined in a White Paper in October, which discussed vertical take-off and landing on-demand (VTOL) aviation.
It welcomed Mr Moore's appointment, adding its wider role was as a catalyst to the "growing VTOL ecosystem".
Uber is already investing in self-driving cars, with partnerships with Volvo and Daimler.
In its White Paper, Uber said that on-demand aviation "has the potential to radically improve urban mobility, giving people back time lost in their daily commutes".
"Just as skyscrapers allowed cities to use limited land more efficiently, urban air transportation will use three-dimensional airspace to alleviate transportation congestion on the ground."
It envisaged a network of small, electric aircraft that would take off and land vertically.
Mr Moore explored a similar concept in a paper published while he was at Nasa.
He said that electric propulsion was a "potential game changing technology" for aircraft, adding that the only thing holding it back was current battery storage.
Slovakian company Aeromobil is one of several working on a prototype flying car, which it is aiming to commercialise this year.

Google Surpasses Apple to Become the Most Valuable Brand in the World: Report

Breaking Apple's five-year record, Google has taken the top spot as the most valuable brand in the world. In the latest Brand Finance Global 500 report, Apple comes in second, followed by Amazon, AT&T, Microsoft, Samsung, Verizon, Walmart, Facebook, and ICBC.
Brand Finance's analysts feel that Apple has "over-exploited the goodwill of its customers" and has "repeatedly disillusioned its advocates with tweaks when material changes were expected." Here the report is talking about the minimal changes introduced on iPhone devices year after year. Furthermore, the report says that "the snaking queues of early adopters have shrunk almost to the point of invisibility," and that "Apple's loss has been Google's gain." Google has been given a brand value of $109.47 billion (roughly Rs. Rs. 7,36,016 crores), compared to Apple's $107.141 billion (roughly Rs. 7,20,294 crores)
"Put simply, Apple has over-exploited the goodwill of its customers, it has failed to generate significant revenues from newer products such as the Apple Watch and cannot demonstrate that genuinely innovative technologies desired by consumers are in the pipeline. Its brand has lost its lustre and must now compete on an increasingly level playing field not just with traditional rival Samsung, but a slew of Chinese brands such as Huawei and OnePlus in the smartphone market, Apple's key source of
profitability," the report reads.

Microsoft Hardens Latest Windows Version Against Hackers

Microsoft has fortified the latest version of Windows to make it more secure than previous editions, but the strongest protections will be available only to those willing to pay a steep price for them.

Windows 10 Anniversary Update has introduced many mitigation techniques in core Windows components and the Microsoft Edge browser, helping protect customers from entire classes of exploits for very recent and even undisclosed vulnerabilities, Matt Oh and Elia Florio of Microsoft's Windows Defender ATP Research Team wrote in an online post last week.

Countering unidentified vulnerabilities -- also known as "zero day" vulnerabilities -- is particularly important because they are a powerful tool used to penetrate systems and steal data by attackers, especially those working for nation-states.

Rather than focus on a single vulnerability, Microsoft is focusing on mitigation techniques that counter classes of exploits, Oh and Florio explained.

"As a result, these mitigation techniques are significantly reducing attack surfaces that would have been available to future Zero-Day exploits," they wrote.

Paying for Protection

For the most effective post-breach protection, customers should sign up for Windows Defender ATP, Oh and Florio suggested, a service that is available only to users of Windows Enterprise E5.

That appears to be a departure from how Windows security was treated in the past, observed Michael Cherry, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft.

When Microsoft launched its Trustworthy Computing initiative in 2002, there was a commitment to making all versions of Windows equally secure, he recalled.

"Now, what Microsoft is saying in a subtle way," Cherry told TechNewsWorld, is that "to be the most secure on Windows, you should be using Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection -- but we're saving that for our best customers, our customers willing to pay for the enterprise edition. That's a big change that's happening in Windows security."
What Users Get

Nevertheless, the security improvements in the new Windows 10 Anniversary Update are worthwhile for consumers.

"This is great news for users," said Jerome Segura, a senior security researcher for Malwarebytes.

"Microsoft is addressing zero days and exploits in general by sandboxing a lot of the components in the operating system," he told TechNewsWorld.

Sandboxing is a technique used to isolate activity in a space where it can be observed without affecting its surroundings. If it behaves badly in the sandbox, then it won't be allowed to play with the other parts of a system.

Sandbox techniques were used in Windows 10 to neutralize an exploit that used corrupt fonts to gain escalated privileges on a system, Microsoft's Oh and Florio explained. Escalated privileges allow an intruder greater freedom to roam and access data on a network.

Room for Improvement

While Microsoft is making good progress in hardening the Windows kernel, it could improve the operating system's security in other areas, too. One of those areas is third-party applications and components.

"While it's trying to ensure that its operating system is secure, it still depends on Flash, Java and other pieces of software. At the end of the day, the security of the system is going to depend on all the pieces, not just what Microsoft ships," Malwarebytes' Segura observed.

"You can have an OS that's safe, but if you have an outdated Flash plug-in, you can still get infected," he pointed out.

Hackers also are exploiting Microsoft Office documents.

"Microsoft needs to tighten up legacy code like macros -- either disable it or sandbox it," Segura said.

Threat to Security Vendors?

As Windows security improves, will it threaten the security ecosystem that has grown up around the OS?

"Ultimately, Microsoft's new anti-exploit features in Windows calls into question the value of legacy antivirus protections," said Simon Crosby, CTO of Bromium.

"However, it is important to note that relatively few enterprises use Windows 10 yet, so any Microsoft mitigation in Windows 10 that fails to address the legacy Windows installed base cannot address threats targeting [the security ecosystem]," he told TechNewsWorld.

Windows users still need to use antivirus programs, added Jack E. Gold, founder and principal analyst with J.Gold Associates. "Microsoft is pushing its antivirus program," he told TechNewsWorld, "so it's not saying you don't need antivirus anymore."
